The New ICF PCC-MCC Exam (November 2026): Less Recall, More Judgment

If an ICF PCC or MCC credential is on your horizon, the ICF credentialing exam is about to change. Beginning November 10, 2026, the International Coaching Federation offers a new written PCC-MCC Exam, built on the updated ICF Core Competencies and Code of Ethics. ICF sets out the details in its Candidate's Guide to the Updated Credentialing Exam.

Here is our view at Happy Whole Human®: this is good news for coaches who learned to coach by coaching. The new format rewards the judgment you build in real sessions far more than anything you can memorize the night before.

The new ICF PCC-MCC Exam at a glance

  • Launch date: November 10, 2026
  • Who takes it: candidates for the ICF Professional Certified Coach (PCC) and Master Certified Coach (MCC) credentials
  • Format: 80 questions in 150 minutes, with an optional 10-minute break
  • Question types: 44 situational judgment questions and 36 knowledge-based multiple-choice questions
  • Based on: the updated ICF Core Competencies and ICF Code of Ethics
  • Transition: either exam until March 31, 2027; only the new exam from April 1, 2027
  • Result: the same PCC or MCC credential, whichever exam you pass

What is changing in the ICF PCC-MCC exam?

According to ICF, the new exam has 80 items and 150 minutes, with one optional 10-minute break at the midpoint. It runs in four sections that alternate between two kinds of questions:

  • 44 situational judgment questions. You read a coaching scenario and choose both the most effective and the least effective response.
  • 36 knowledge questions. Multiple choice, testing your understanding of coaching concepts, principles and professional standards.

The content covers the same four domains as before: Foundation, Co-Creating the Relationship, Communicating Effectively, and Cultivating Learning and Growth. ICF says the overall difficulty and expected pass rate stay consistent with the current exam, and that successful candidates earn the same PCC or MCC credential whichever exam they take.

Situational judgment questions: why the "least effective" answer is the real test

Picking the best response is familiar. Naming the least effective one asks something subtler: can you recognize the move that would quietly close your client down? Leading with your own solution. Rushing past emotion to get to action. Holding on to your agenda when theirs has shifted.

In our trainings we spend a lot of time here, because restraint is a coaching skill. Masterful coaches are defined as much by what they choose not to do as by what they say. The new exam simply makes that visible.

The same goes for ethics. With the updated Code of Ethics woven into the scenarios, ethics is no longer a chapter you review at the end. It shows up inside the coaching conversation, where it actually lives.

How to prepare for the ICF PCC or MCC exam: Inspect, Adapt, Improve

At Happy Whole Human we use the Agile Wellness™ cycle with clients and teams. It works just as well for exam preparation.

  1. Inspect. Take ICF's sample questions cold. Notice where your instinct differs from ICF's answer, and write down why.
  2. Adapt. Go back to the ICF Core Competencies and Code of Ethics for the competencies where your instinct and the standard parted ways. Practice those moves in real or practice sessions, and get feedback on them.
  3. Improve. Test yourself again, on the same competencies, and look at the change. Repeat until your judgment and the standard line up.

ICF says most existing study materials remain relevant, and it plans a free tutorial on the new question formats before launch.

Should you take the current ICF exam or the new PCC-MCC exam?

During the transition, choose based on where you are today:

  • Ready now and prepared on the current standards? The current exam remains open until March 31, 2027. Leave yourself time for a second attempt before that date, since any attempt from April 1, 2027 is the new exam.
  • Just starting to prepare? Prepare on the updated Core Competencies and Code of Ethics, and plan for the new PCC-MCC Exam.

Either way, your credential is the same.
